This project has received funding from the European Union Framework Program for Research and Innovation (SC5-18a-2014) under grant agreement nº 641538
Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) (Italy)
CMCC (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change www.cmcc.it) is a non-profit
research organization on climate science and policy. Its activities focus on the
development and applications of models (from global to regional and lower scales) on
climate dynamics and impacts, and adaptation/mitigation policies, as well as socio-economic
implications. The division involved in this project is IAFENT - Impacts on Agriculture, Forest, and
Natural Ecosystems: climate policies, carbon and water cycle, land use changes and forestry are
integrated in the analysis of climate change impacts. CMCC acquired portfolio of research projects
includes 123 funded projects: 2 FP6, 35 FP7 and 86 projects funded under other EU and international
research grants (tot. of ca. 44 M€). In about a half of the implemented projects, CMCC acted as the
coordinator.
Key project participants________________________________________________________
Dr Antonio Bombelli has a degree in Biological Sciences and a PhD in Plant Sciences. His
background concerns Plant Ecophysiology, Forestry, Carbon Cycle and Climate Change, particularly with
regard to terrestrial ecosystems response to natural and anthropogenic stress. He collaborated (2006-2011)
with the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nation (FAO), working on the coordination of the
Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS) programme and its Terrestrial Carbon Observations (TCO)
initiative, including the standardisation process of the Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) in the
terrestrial domain. He is Manager of the Division on Impacts on Agriculture, Forest and Natural
Ecosystems (IAFENT) of CMCC, since November 2011. He is the coordinator of the Task CL-02
“Global Carbon Observation and Analysis” of the GEO (Group on Earth Observations) 2012-2015 Work
Plan and member of the GEO Societal Benefit Implementation Board. He is the Project Manager of the
European FP7 projects ClimAfrica (www.climafrica.net) and GEOCARBON (www.geocarbon.net). He
was the manager of the FP6 CarboAfrica (www.carboafrica.net). Key role on the project: Staff working
for the beneficiary – His role will be to contribute to the strategic goals (Task 2.1), to carry out the EVs
assessment for carbon (Task 2.2), to liaise with "carbon-related" stakeholders (Task 3.2), to support
dissemination and exploitation activities for the "carbon" side and link between GEO and the carbon
observation community (Tasks 7.1 and 7.2). He is responsible for the deliverable D 7.3 "Strategic view
for the sustainability of ENEON after the end of the project.
Dr Francesca Pretto has a PhD in Ecological Sciences and is graduated in Natural Sciences. In
2011 she obtained a Master degree in Global Environmental Protection and International Policies. She has
more than 8 years of experience in European and national related projects management. At CMCC she is
involved in the coordination office of GEOCARBON project. Key role on the project: In-house
consultant without payment – She will support Antonio Bombelli for the CMCC relevant tasks.
